Earn Why You Learn
Having a paid internship in college is way more impactful! According to NACE, 66.4% of paid interns get job offers compared to just 43.7% of unpaid ones. Plus, paid internships show companies value your work and help you financially, making the whole experience more rewarding and beneficial.
The application for the 2025 Spring semester will open in March 2024. Once the application is live, students can apply via our website. We also post our application on Handshake and Hire-a-Niner. Follow GardHouse on LinkedIn to stay up to date on all application announcements.
We review applications on a rolling basis until the cohort has filled. There is no hard deadline to apply. However, students are encouraged to apply early.
Current students pursuing an Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.3 or higher are eligible to apply. In-person programming (regardless of virtual internship settings) is required during the semester, so students must attend school in Charlotte, or the surrounding areas.
Students must complete all sections of the application, including a resume and essay prompt. If students are invited to complete additional screening questions, they will be required to upload a copy of their transcript and provide their 1st and 2nd choice internship industry selections. Students will be notified via email if selected for a virtual interview.
Internship opportunities vary throughout the year based on the needs of our Employer Partners. GardHouse has a network of over 180 Employer Partners that range from local non-profits, small businesses and government agencies. Interns are assigned an Employer Partner based on their major and area of interest.
Currently, interns must have a demonstrated interest in Business & Business Management
Communication & Marketing, Computer Science/IT, Finance, Public Health, Social Work, & Psychology.
Yes, if they have a valid visa and are eligible to work in the United States. GardHouse is unable to provide work visa sponsorship.
Once a student’s application has been reviewed, students will be notified via email if selected to submit additional screening questions. If selected to move forward, students will receive an email with a job description and additional information about the Employer Partner. Students will have the option to register for a virtual interview with the Employer Partner.
The length of time it takes to review your application will depend on the date it was submitted. However, students can expect to receive an acceptance decision in early November for Spring internship opportunities and early May for Fall internship opportunities.
Acceptance into GardHouse is competitive, and we do have a waitlist. If you have been invited to interview or extended an internship offer but are unable to fulfill the GardHouse requirements, please contact internships@gardhouse.org so that individuals from the waitlist can take advantage of this opportunity. Students that decline an interview opportunity or offer will need to submit a new application for the next internship cycle.
Yes, students who apply after a cohort has been filled may be invited to register for our waitlist. Once an internship opportunity becomes available, students will be selected based on the following factors: previous GardHouse internship experience, date/time waitlist form was submitted, additional employment commitments, and attendance & performance review scores (for returning intern applicants only). Students will be notified via email regarding their waitlist status.
General Questions
GardHouse internships are 10 weeks in length during the fall and spring semesters. We do not currently offer summer internships. All students (including current interns) are required to submit a new application to be considered for an internship opportunity each semester.
Interns work up to 15 hours per week. Some interns work less than 15 hrs based on the needs of the Employer Partner throughout the year.
We offer virtual, in-person, and hybrid internship opportunities based on the needs of our Employer Partners.
GardHouse interns receive paid work experience, personalized career readiness development and increase their social capital through networking opportunities all while building a community with other GardHouse interns and alumni. If your institution offers class credit for internship experiences, GardHouse will work with your school to complete necessary paperwork.
Our mission at GardHouse is to create a seamless pipeline to employment for minorities, regardless of where they seek full-time employment. Our Employer Partners are not expected to hire GardHouse interns as staff after the conclusion of the internship. However, some interns do receive employment offers based on their work performance throughout the year.
Interns are expected to attend all virtual and in-person programming in addition to working up to 15 hours per week at their internship site. With that being said, interns are allowed no more than 3 absences during the year in the event of extenuating circumstances. Absences/tardiness must be communicated with the GardHouse team in advance. Repeated absences/tardiness will result in dismissal from the program.
